ISSMGE – Election of President for the Term 2026-2030

I am very honoured to be nominated by the British Geotechnical Association for the post of President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. I am also a member of the New Zealand Geotechnical Society, whose Management Committee has endorsed my candidacy.

Throughout my career I have been an active member of the ISSMGE though Member Society and Technical Committee activities and conference organisation. I have also taken on leadership roles at both national and international level.

I have been Chair of the British Geotechnical Association and have also served on the Management Committee of the New Zealand Geotechnical Society. In my service for the ISSMGE, from 2009 to 2013 I was First Vice-President, Vice-President for Australasia and Treasurer. I am currently Chair of the ISSMGE Foundation

My motivation for standing for the role of President is that I have a strong vision for the future of the Society that I believe will resonate with ISSMGE members. I also believe that, because of my senior roles in internationally leading universities, I have the professional and technical knowledge – together with the leadership and diplomatic skills – necessary to lead the ISSMGE in its aim “to promote international cooperation amongst engineers and scientists for the advancement of knowledge in the field of geotechnics and its engineering applications”.

If elected, my presidency will focus on three connected priorities:

  • Positioning geotechnics at the heart of climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Removing barriers so that every member and Member Society can participate, contribute, and benefit
  • Strengthening governance to ensure the Society remains effective, transparent, and resilient
